Well, just watched the 1st episode of the new season last night, and published my overcast covering it today (the trailer of which is pasted below). As usual, Moore and Eick did not disappoint, once again delivering a solid season opener, of which its only major crime was that it was simply over too quickly!
The episode opened with an enormous space battle (something that is surprisingly not too common on a show which is essentially about war), one which again shows the incredible talent of the visual effects artists working on this show, who consistently deliver work up to feature film standards. Hell, I thought overall it was a better space battle than the one that opened EPISODE III, and God knows how much more money Lucas had at his disposal with that one!
But we all know that it's not really the space battles which keep bringing people back to BG week after week, but the human element, and this episode was full of all sorts of compelling drama in that department, leaving the doors opening for some pretty compelling narrative directions in this final season. Starbuck is now apparently at the top of the Cylon suspects lists after her sudden and unexplained return, and finds herself struggling to make the others believe that she did actually find Earth (which I'm inclined to believe she did). Meanwhile Baltar is well on his way to believing himself the "new messiah" with the support of his new group of devoted followers, and the newly revealed four of "the Final Five" are still trying to figure out if they can trust themselves within the fleet. Anders in particular had a fascinating encounter with a cylon raider, which seemed to result in the cylons pulling back when they had the humans dead to rights, making us wonder just what indeed ARE the final five's roles in the big picture here?
All in all, a very satisfying season opener that has already left me hungry for more. Next Friday can't come soon enough!
